Tati & Chaplin
Jacques Tatis Playtime (Le temps des loisirs)
is an essential experience in theatrical viewing -- and reviewing, and
reviewing; it begs to be seen on the big screen. It is not just a brilliant
and graceful observational comedy about modern living, but
one the most massive undertakings in film history (shot over two years,
with a total of 365 days of shooting, and edited for another year). Tati
invested every penny he had, and then borrowed more, in order to create
the ultimate movie set as playpen, constructing on the outskirts of Paris
a Tati-ville for Mr. Hulot to wander around in: a complete
futurist office building and its surrounding urban environment were built
exactly to his specifications.
Dir. Jacques Tati, 1967, 35mm, 155 min.
Followed by Modern Times - 10:45pm
Serious and silly, contemplative and crazy, Modern Times is an unmissable
treasure.
Dir. Charles Chaplin, 1936, 35mm, 87 min.
Tickets - $10 for both movies

The
Spectacular Art of Jean-Léon Gérôme
|
|
Jean-Léon Gérôme
(French, 18241904) ranks among the most successful artists of
the nineteenth century.
Ranging from the ancient Roman arenas of gladiatorial combat to the
streets of modern Egypt, his spectacular, meticulously rendered pictures
captured the public's imagination and made him one of France's most
honored painters.
Restless and experimental, he also helped pioneer the artistic use
of photography and made bold forays into polychrome and mixed-media
sculpture. Critically controversial in his day, Gérôme
was neglected for much of the twentieth century due to the triumph
of Impressionism and Modernism.
Organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Musée d'Orsay,
Paris, in association with the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, this
is the first comprehensive show devoted to the artist in decades.

A fascinating psychological study, a socio-critical investigation
and Isabelle Adjanis first film in five years.
Adjani plays Sonia Bergerac, a teacher at a tough junior high. Despite
the principals warnings, she wears a skirt to work. She simply wants
to teach her class but the insults are just too much. Scared and taking
antidepressants, Sonia finds a gun in a bag belonging to one of her students;
she takes her class hostage so she can finally teach a proper lesson on
Molière.

Eric
Baudelaire
In his first U.S. museum solo show, Paris-based Eric Baudelaire
will present his video Sugar Water (2007).
The action takes place on a Paris metro platform where a billposter covers
a large advertising billboard with a sequence of images that depict a
car parked on a Parisian street that bursts into flames, becomes swallowed
up in smoke, and then remains only as a skeleton of the former car.
Using a laborious traditional system to mount the details of each image,
this cinematic event gradually unfolds over the 72-minute film, offering
a slow contemplative consideration of political violence as a counterpoint
to the rapid barrage of images we typically experience in our news media.
Despite its slow, nearly meditative pace, Baudelaire creates a haunting
and provocative work that completely absorbs the viewer.
