Soirée 'Festival of the Lilies'
In celebration of an old-age French custom
that marks the arrival of spring with bunches of muguet, NOIR Food &
Wine is hosting a special soirée called Festival of the Lilies.
Chef Claud Baltran has prepared a wonderful selection of
French cheeses including Brillat Savarin, Tome de Savoie, Bris Nangis,
Fourme d'Ambert, Bucheron, Petit Agour, to be paired with French wines
like Muscadet, Gamay and Malbec. You are in for treat!
The tradition traces back to French Renaissance when King
Charles the 9th gave bunches of the small fragrant muguet
to his courtiers for luck. To this day vendors sell sprays of the flower
from every street corner in France as a way to bring good fortune for
the year ahead.

The
Maids, by Jean Genet
|
|
The Maids, by Jean Genet, is the story of two sisters,
domestic workers in a wealthy home, who escape the drudgery of their
daily lives by engaging in secret role-playing games of dominance
and revenge.
When an impulsive prank inspired by the game has unforeseen ramifications,
the sisters face grim consequences as their transgression threatens
to be uncovered.
Driven towards madness in a desperate attempt to save themselves,
the line between fantasy and reality blurs as judgement approaches.

Printing
the Grand Manner: Charles Le Brun and Monumental Prints in the Age of
Louis XIV of France
May 18October 17, 2010
|
|
Printing the Grand Manner explores
the form, content, and function of late 17th-century reproductive
engravings that, given their quality and impressive size, were meant
to evoke the grandeur of Charles Le Brun's large-scale paintings and
tapestry designs.
Despite the fact that no other moment in the history of art witnessed
such a concerted production of unusually grand reproductive prints,
this visually compelling group of images has not drawn the attention
of specialists or the public (in part, because the prints are difficult
to handle and display).
The exhibition examines the prints' rich vocabulary and illuminates
the context of their production between the mid-1660s and 1690.
It also calls out the relationship between Le Brun and his printmakers,
while interpreting the prints and their inscriptions in light of debates
regarding allegories, narratives, and the representation of Louis
XIV. |

My
Sister in This House
|
|
Deaf West Theatre is proud to present
My Sister in This House, written by Wendy Kesselman and directed by
Michael Unger.
Inspired by a true incident in 1930s France, this haunting
play explores class struggle, identity, and what happens when the
need for connection and companionship is ignored and abused.
The play is based on the true story of the Papin Sisters, who
suffered through an abusive childhood and an estranged workplace in
1930s France.
Their bizarre tale inspired many writers of the era, including Jean
Genet and Jean Paul Sartre. |
The themes of the play are accentuated by the unique theatrical
experience that Deaf West Theatre is known for: here, deaf and hearing
actors perform in a multilingual setting of American Sign Language, spoken
English, and open captioning.
The divide between the deaf and the hearing worlds provide added thematic
weight to the world that the Papin Sisters live in.
Join us for a thrilling, innovative evening of boundary-stretching theater.
Tickets: $ 25
Due to mature content, My Sister in This House is recommended for children
13 years old and older.
