Simone Signoret Double Feature:

DIABOLIQUE, 1955, Janus Films, 110 min.
Dir. Henri-Georges Clouzot.
One of the greatest psychological thrillers ever made, DIABOLIQUE focuses on the browbeaten wife (Vera Clouzot) of a brutal schoolmaster and his tough-as-nails mistress (Simone Signoret), as they team up to murder their mutual tormentor.
But that’s only the beginning of this edge-of-your-seat affair, a twisting, turning shocker that still holds up today as one of the all-time classics of suspense. Legend has it that Clouzot beat Hitchcock to the punch by only an hour in sewing up rights to the original novel by Pierre Boileau. With sardonic Charles Vanel as the poker-faced inspector.

CASQUE D’OR, 1952, Janus Films, 96 min. Dir. Jacques Becker.
Do not miss this sublime masterpiece of romantic French cinema – simultaneously a heartbreaking adult fairy tale and an impressionist rendering of the turn-of-the-century Parisian underworld.
The fleeting moments of shared love and erotic passion between Serge Reggiani and Simone Signoret are genuine poetry – moments cut short by the jealous machinations of others.

Rohmer Double Feature

MY NIGHT AT MAUD’S (MA NUIT CHEZ MAUD), 1969, Wellspring, 105 min.
The third of writer/director Eric Rohmer’s six "moralist tales," this deeply insightful examination of male and female relationships caused an overnight sensation.
Winner of Cannes’ Golden Palm, and nominated for an Oscar, the film remains one of the most successful attempts to unravel the complex human psyche as narrator Jean-Louis Trintignant vows to marry, only to fall-in-fascination with another woman, divorcee Maud, (Françoise Fabian). With cinematography by Nestor Almendros.

CLAIRE’S KNEE (LE GENOU DE CLAIRE), 1970, Wellspring, 105 min. Dir. Eric Rohmer.
While vacationing, Jean Claude Brialy becomes obsessed with a desire to have tactile contact with a certain body part of 13-year-old Laurence de Monaghan. In this, the author’s fourth installment of psychological realism, members of the opposite sex, here in the form of two young sisters, Claire, the physical, and Beatrice Romand, the intellectual, again impinge on an impending marriage; handled here as a complex comedy of manners.

Melville Double Feature:

Director's Cut LE CERCLE ROUGE, 1970, Rialto Pictures, 140 min. Director Jean-Pierre Melville’s masterpiece of Gallic gangsterism starring Alain Delon and Yves Montand.
Impassive faces, snap-brim hats, dangling cigarettes, sunglasses after dark, raincoats without rain, nightclub floor shows...
All join forces for a meticulously orchestrated heist of a Place Vendôme bijouterie, a silent tour-de-force in the grand movie tradition of RIFIFI, TOPKAPI, and THE ASPHALT JUNGLE.

LE DOULOS, 1962, Rialto Pictures, 108 min.
Director Melville met Jean-Paul Belmondo during a brief cameo in Godard's BREATHLESS -- here, he gives Belmondo one of his best roles, that of a two-faced informer caught between the police and his "old pal," played by doom-faced Serge Reggiani.
"It was only when LE DOULOS was finished and Belmondo saw himself on the screen that he realized, with great astonishment, ‘Christ! The stoolie is me!’ " -- Melville.

A Rainbow in the Sky
A temporary site-specific artwork by Daniel Buren

Internationally celebrated artist Daniel Buren returns to Pasadena with a large-scale site-specific artwork in the One Colorado Courtyard.
Buren’s installation, A Rainbow in the Sky, consists of thousands of colorful striped flags suspended and hovering like an open “ceiling” overhead. The installation is free and open to the public.

One of France’s most famous contemporary artists, Buren is the creator of work such as the internationally acclaimed Les Colonnes de Buren sculpture (titled by Buren as Les Deux Plateaux) in the Cour d’Honneur of the Palais Royal, Paris.

Brigitte Bardot Double Feature:

...AND GOD CREATED WOMAN (ET DIEU...CRÉA LA FEMME), 1956, TF1, 95 min.
French director Roger Vadim’s audaciously sexy feature film debut not only puts him on the map here in America, but the saucy young starlet Brigitte Bardot as well. Bardot is Juliette, an earthy ne’er-do-well involved with two brothers (Jean-Louis Trintignant, Christian Marquand) and, for good measure, older Curt Jurgens, something that causes escalating dissension and chaos.

THE TRUTH (LA VERITÉ), 1960, Columbia, 130 min. Dir. Henri-Georges Clouzot.
Bardot stars as Dominique, a hedonistic free-spirit on trial for the murder of her lover, musician Sami Frey. Once again Clouzot breaks ground in his fearless look at private insecurities, revealing what supposedly constitutes a ‘sordid’ lifestyle, and why it is so threatening to bourgeois society. Co-written by Clouzot and his wife Vera (star of DIABOLIQUE.) Winner of the 1961 Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.

Being Jewish in France (Comme un Juif en France)
Documentary Premiere
2007/b&w and color/185 min./digital | Scr/dir: Yves Jeuland.

Yves Jeuland's sweeping new documentary explores the rich and complex history of Jews in France, the first country to grant them citizenship.
Beginning with Revolutionary cries of "Vive la France" in Yiddish, the film explores the explosive Dreyfus Affair, the Vichy government's collaboration with the Nazis, and the absorption of Sephardic Jews from Arab countries in the decades after WWII.
With interviews with more than a dozen leading French politicians, intellectuals, and artists—amid a treasure trove of archival material—Being Jewish in France masterfully interweaves human testimony and historical evidence.
Narrated by Mathieu Almaric, a regular in Arnaud Desplechin's films and the star of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, the film won the Jewish Experience Award at the Jerusalem International Film Festival.

Godard Double Feature:

BREATHLESS (A BOUT DE SOUFFLE), 1960, New Yorker Films, 90 min. Dir. Jean-Luc Godard.
Lip-stroking pug Jean-Paul Belmondo on the run, shooting cops and stealing cars – and cash from the handbag of Herald Tribune-hawking girlfriend Jean Seberg; with the couple engaging in boudoir philosophy, staring contests, sous-blanket tussles and plenty of smoking. The start of Godard’s decade of supreme hipness and seemingly compulsive, often outrageous innovation. "No film has been at once so connected to all that had come before it and yet so liberating... like high-energy fusion of jazz and philosophy." – Richard Brody, The New Yorker.

ALPHAVILLE (ALPHAVILLE, UNE ETRANGE AVENTURE DE LEMMY CAUTION), 1965, Janus Films, 99 min.
Jean-Luc Godard’s trip into the future with erstwhile B-movie hero Lemmy Caution (Eddie Constantine) trekking through space to track down Professor von Braun, aided by the prof’s daughter Anna Karina, squaring off in a final showdown with the Alpha 60 computer.

From Baroque to Folk: Pastoral Music from France
Performer : Distorted Pearl

French painting and music have been inspired by pastoral sensibilities, especially in the Baroque era.
The French Baroque courts of Louis XIV and Louis XV refined rustic folk instruments like the bagpipe and hurdy-gurdy into the ornate musette de cour and vielle à roue, musical representations of the Arcadian philosophy.
Distorted Pearl presents a program of French Baroque duets written specifically for these instruments, as well as transcriptions of other Baroque hits and French folk music of the last two centuries, played on original period instruments and facsimiles.

This concert is held in the garden.

Léon Morin, Priest (Léon Morin, prêtre)
Theatrical Release
1961/b&w/115 min. | Scr/dir: Jean-Pierre Melville; w/ Jean-Paul Belmondo, Emmanuelle Riva.

During the Occupation in a provincial French village, Communist widow Riva becomes enthralled by serenely devout Belmondo, fresh off Breathless and switching gears from hardboiled gangster to enigmatic man of the cloth.
Under the taut direction of noir master (and Jewish atheist) Jean-Pierre Melville and based on an autobiographical novel by Beatrice Beck, the platonic encounters and intellectual jousts of this unlikely couple are at once erotic and cerebral.
This reissue of a film rarely seen on the big screen may help to secure its place in the canon of transcendental cinema.

Jessica Fichot
(Saturday only)

Chanteuse and songwriter Jessica Fichot is a lot like her hometown of Paris: French at heart, but with a soul that's truly international. Her multi-ethnic French / Chinese / American upbringing colors the songs on her debut album. It's called Le Chemin, "The Path," and for good reason: Jessica takes the listener on a twisting journey out of the French chanson tradition, into the lands of gypsy jazz, Chinese and Latin American folk music, through the classic American repertoire, and off into the wilderness of her imagination.

The Bear (l'Ours) de Jean-Jacques Annaud (1988)
(w/ live score by No Age)

L.A.-based, world-renowned experimental noise pop duo No Age will appear live at the Cinefamily to perform their brand-new score for French director Jean-Jacques Annaud's majestic 1988 film The Bear, a near-wordless cinematic expedition deep into the savagery and tenderness of the animal kingdom.
Told from the titular species' point of view, The Bear chronicles the journey of an orphan bear cub and a lone adult bear banding together to avoid two human hunters.
Along the way, director Annaud has great fun with the storytelling possibilities from a non-human perspective, including dream sequences and an unforgettable psychedelic mushroom bear trip!

With nearly no (human) dialogue, the film easily lends itself to live scoring, and No Age drummer Dean Spunt and guitarist Randy Randall have crafted a shimmering 90-minute set of sonic blasts and delicate textures that perfectly complement the peculiar, touching and altogether unique experience that is The Bear.
