Les
Quatre Saisons - Ballet Preljocaj
Daring, passionately sensual, and provocative, the dance
works of French-born Albanian Angelin Preljocaj have left an indelible
mark on international dance, including his ravishing Near Life Experience
(at UCLA Live in 2004), his dramatically modern take on Romeo and Juliet
(at UCLA in 1998) and his powerful version of Le Sacre du Printemps.
Now Preljocaj takes on one of classical musics cultural landmarks,
Vivaldis The Four Seasons, in a fantastical interpretation
bursting with color, playful energy and magic.
Featuring irrepressibly vibrant dancing and the surreal and eccentrically
beautiful set design of renowned French sculptor Fabrice Hyber,
this imaginative work unfolds like a lucid dream as each season evokes
primal thoughts and desires in the form of cool femme fatales, bright
green Martian-like figures, and a giant prickly hedgehog lurking across
the stage.

When Myths Collide: The Golden Age
Associated with bucolic scenes of sensuous interiors, Henri Matisse
built his extraordinary art practice on aesthetic delight and beauty.
Conscious of his own myth as artist-genius, Matisse fostered a carefully
constructed identity that emphasized beauty over strife. What happens
when Matisses work is examined in a context other than pleasure?
Join Laurie Monahan, Associate Professor of History of Art and Architecture
at University of California, Santa Barbara, in a contrarian rethinking
of the career of Henri Matisse.
This first of three sessions, titled The Golden Age, is
devoted to the early works of Matisse and explores the ways in which his
position with the Fauves, artists known for their use of strong color,
complicated his pursuit of pleasure.
The per-session fee of $15 includes admission to the galleries
on the day of class.
Walk-in registration begins at 10:15 a.m. For further information and
registration, call the Education Department at (626) 844-6980.
The second session, titled The Myth, Attacked, is

French
Journalist Christian Chesnot presents:
"Journalists in high risk zones: how to balance
security and information"
|
|
In August 2004, Christian Chesnot
and his colleague Georges Malbrunot were kidnapped by Islamic terrorists
in Iraq.
The two journalists were freed after 124 days in captivity.
For a long time journalists were protected by "de facto"
immunity. Today, they have become targets in conflicts worldwide.
How can they carry on exercising their work in such hostile climates?
Is information worth such risks? How can they protect themselves?
Christian Chesnot is a journalist for Radio France International and
a graduate of the "Centre de formation des journalistes".
As a specialist of the Middle East he has lived many years in Cairo,
Egypt.
He has written four books : Mémoires d'otages (2005), Les Années
Saddam (2003), Palestiniens 1948-1998 : Génération fedayin,
de la lutte armée à l'autonomie (1998) et La Bataille
de l'eau au Proche-Orient (1993). |

L'Heure
d'été (Summer Hours) - Juliette Binoche
When we pass on, what becomes of the objects we have
cherished during our lives?
In this Chekhovian drama about loss and change, French director Olivier
Assayas subtly explores the fractious relationship among three adult
siblings when they return to their childhood home to dispose of their
mother's collection of nineteenth-century paintings and furniture.
One of four films commissioned by the Musée d'Orsay in honor of
its twentieth anniversary.
"Assayas's most fully satisfying film for some while, this is a warm,
wise drama about the tensions and mysteries of family life."Geoff
Andrew, Time Out.

Berling, Edith Scob.

"Le
dernier voyage de Monsieur Claudel "
Pièce écrite, mise en scène/interprétée
par Sylvain BELTRAN
Résumé de la pièce:
23 février 1955, Paul Claudel, haute figure des lettres
parisiennes, quitte l'ici-bas.

Walls
of Algiers: Narratives of the City
|
|
The city of Algiers, renowned
for its white walls cascading to the Mediterranean, historically
sheltered a diverse population. During the Ottoman centuries (1529-1830),
Algeria had been a semi-independent province of the empire.
French rule (1830-1962) transformed Algeria. European norms and
the French system of governance were imposed. The land was mapped,
its peoples surveyed and classified, and dramatic interventions
to urban fabrics enforced a new duality.
In Algiers the "Arab" city on the hillside, known as the
Casbah, was separated from the "French" or European city
that spread out in districts below and around the Casbah. This division
endured during the 132 years of French occupation leading to the
War of Independence (1954-1962).
More than a colonial capital, Algiers served as a testing ground
for urban renewal with its walls extending metaphorically across
the Mediterranean to take part in the search for modernity.
Walls of Algiers: Narratives of the City, examines the city's complex
history by considering its places and peoples through diverse 19th-
and 20th-century visual sources.
The exhibition will trace, for example, an itinerary of the Casbah
and the European quarters through vintage postcards, and juxtapose
the long-tradition of staged Orientalist representations of "indigenous"
people with photojournalist coverage from the Algerian War.
