U.S. Premiere
The refined elegance of the classical piano meets the sensual magic
of the flamenco in this passionate evening of Spanish music featuring
three of the worlds most intrepid and charismatic female artists.
Hailed by The New York Times as the best piano duet in front
of an audience today, Frances Katia and Marielle Labèque
dazzle crowds with their wide emotional range, technical fireworks
and exquisite lyricism.
They will be joined by the premier female flamenco vocalist of her
generation, Catalonian singer Mayte Martin, whose stunning voice,
powerful range and inventive phrasing transcends flamboyant
theatrics to go straight to the heart of the art form [The Boston
Globe].
Their program includes works from their new collaborative recording
De Fuego y de Agua, featuring soulful renditions of Spanish classics. |

Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles
1975/color/201 min. | Scr/dir: Chantal Akerman, w/
Delphine Seyrig.
A groundbreaking work of art cinema, Chantal Akermans
sharply observed and compellingly restrained masterpiece recounts the
seemingly innocuous household chores of single-mother Jeanne Dielman (Seyrig).
But beneath the surface of her modest Belgian petit bourgeois behavior,
recorded in real time by cinematographer Babette Mangolte, Akerman uncovers
a feminist tragedy.
A majestic movie! Akerman fills her movies with patterns and textures
of ordinary life, the stuff other films never even notice. Today the films
observational strategiesits long takes and scrupulous framingpractically
amount to a lingua franca of international art film.Dennis
Lim, The New York Times.

WOMAN NEXT DOOR (LA FEMME DÁ
CÔTÉ)
1981, Janus Films, 106 min. Dir. François Truffaut.
Bernard (Gerard Depardieu) was living happily with his wife Arlette
and his son Thomas. One day, a couple, Philippe and Mathilde Bauchard
(Fanny Ardant), moves into the next house. This is the accidental
reunion of Bernard and Mathilde, who had a passionate love affair
years ago. The relationship revives... A somber study of human feelings.

READ MY LIPS
2001, Magnolia Pictures, 115 min. Dir. Jacques Audiard.
Carla (Emmanuelle Devos, winner of the Cesar 2001 Award for Best Actress
for her performance here) is an intelligent but lonely and sexually
frustrated secretary who suffers from loss of hearing. She hires unsophisticated
ex-con Paul (Vincent Cassel) as her assistant, and soon the two start
using each others particular talents for much more dangerous
and criminal enterprises. A splendid thriller of passion and double-crossing
that revives the noir spirit of Jacques Becker and Jean-Pierre Melville! |

Michel Legrand and Michel Colombier Double Feature:

THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR
1968, 102 min. MGM Repertory, Dir. Norman
Jewison.
One of our favorite guilty pleasures from the 1960s: Steve McQueen
stars as bachelor supremo Thomas Crown, whos just pulled off
the perfect multi-million-dollar bank heist -- until he runs into
mondo-chic insurance investigator Faye Dunaway, who cant decide
whether she wants to make love to him or throw him in the slammer!
Features some of the grooviest split-screen images ever, courtesy
of director Jewison and co-editor Hal Ashby, with beautiful cinematography
by Haskell Wexler.
Academy Award winner for Best Song, the haunting "The Windmills
of Your Mind," by Michel Legrand and Alan & Marilyn
Bergman. |

AGAINST ALL ODDS
1984, Sony Repertory, 128 min.
Director Taylor Hackford reinvents film noir by taking it out of
the shadows and setting it in the blinding Southern California sun
in this sexy riff on OUT OF THE PAST. Jeff Bridges is a washed-up
pro football star who gets in over his head after he takes a job
going after James Woods fugitive girlfriend. When Bridges
finds the woman -- the beautiful Rachel Ward -- sparks fly, and
the ex-athletes desire quickly leads him into a complicated
web of lies, betrayal, and murder.
Michel Colombiers innovative score was one of the first
to employ synthesizers extensively and effectively, a technique
that would influence many 1980s movies to follow.

Maurice Jarre Double Feature:
WITNESS
1985, Paramount, 112 min. Dir. Peter Weir. Harrison Ford shines in one
of his best dramatic roles as a Philadelphia cop who hides out in an Amish
community and finds himself falling in love with widow Kelly McGillis.
The film also sports the feature film debut of actor Viggo Mortensen in
a small supporting role. "The visual look [of WITNESS] comes very
much from Flemish and German painting." Peter Weir.
THE MOSQUITO COAST
1986, Warner Bros., 117 min.
Working from a Paul Schrader script adapted from the Paul Theroux novel,
Peter Weir directs an uncompromising, complex character study of spiritual
crisis teetering over the brink into madness.
Harrison Ford gives one of his finest performances as an egocentric inventor
determined to realize his utopian ideal in the backwaters of Central America,
even if it destroys his family (Helen Mirren is his wife, River Phoenix
his eldest son). A harrowing journey into a modern heart of darkness.

JULIA
1977, 20th Century Fox, 117 min.
Dir. Fred Zinnemann. Jane Fonda plays Lillian Hellman in this autobiographical
tale of Hellmans friendship with Julia (Vanessa Redgrave), a radiant
woman who indoctrinates Hellman into the 1930s European resistance movement.
Jason Robards is superb in an Oscar-winning performance as Dashiell Hammett,
as are Maxmillian Schell, Hal Holbrook and Meryl Streep in her feature
film debut.

THE ENGLISH PATIENT
1996, Miramax, 162 min. Dir. Anthony Minghella.
Ralph Fiennes is badly burned in a WWII plane crash and wakes up in
a monastery, where he claims to have no memory of who he is. As nurse
Juliette Binoche tends to him, his story emerges in flashbacks, and
his passionate affair with Kristin Scott Thomas forms the basis of
one of the most beloved romances in movie history.
Gabriel Yareds Oscar-winning score anchors a richly layered,
novelistic epic that recalls the best films of David Lean and David
O. Selznick. |

CONFERENCE
| LECTURE
11:30 am
"Rousseau,
Tocqueville and American Populism"
The Alliance Française de Pasadena presents a lunchtime lecture
on the history and dynamics of American campaign rhetoric as seen through
the eyes of notable contemporary and historical French commentators.
|
|
Written and delivered by Pasadena resident
Dr. Michael McLendon, the lecture analyses the language and thought
that underlies American political discourse.
In the 19th Century, French social commentator Alexis de Tocqueville
noted the young nations infatuation with egalitarianism and
its flip side, the electorates disdain for sophisticated and
cultured leaders. Eight generations later, why do we continue to respond
to this theme? Why as a nation, are we suspicious of those who are
more qualified than we are to run the country? If we understood the
hidden assumptions behind these enduring ideas, would we still continue
to be swayed by them? |
Dr. Michael McLendon has been teaching political theory
as Assistant Professor at California State University, Los Angeles since
2003 and has published scholarly articles on Jean-Jacques Rousseau
and Tocqueville. He is currently writing a book on amour-propre
and modern liberalism.
A light lunch will be served following the presentation.
The lecture is free for Alliance Française de Pasadena members,
$10:00 for non members.
