Thibaudet plays Gershwin
Jean-Yves Thibaudet was born in Lyon, France, where he began his piano
studies at age five and made his first public appearance at age seven.
At twelve, he entered the Paris Conservatory to study with Aldo Ciccolini
and Lucette Descaves, a friend and collaborator of Ravel. At age 15, he
won the Premier Prix de Conservatoire and, three years later, the Young
Concert Artists Auditions in New York City.
In 2001, the Republic of France awarded Thibaudet the Chevalier de lOrdre
des Arts et des Lettres; in 2002, he was awarded the Premio Pegasus from
the Spoleto Festival in Italy, for his artistic achievements and his longstanding
involvement with the festival. His most recent accolade is the 2007 Victoire
dHonneur, a lifetime career achievement award and the highest honor
given by Frances Victoire de la Musique.

Matisses Amours: Illustrations of Pierre de Ronsards Love
Poems
I
dont distinguish between the making of a book and a painting,
said Henri Matisse of the construction of his monumental Florilège
des Amours de Ronsard (Anthology of Ronsards Love Poems). Indeed,
Matisses Poems of Ronsard showcases the qualities found
in his best painting.
Matisses Amours: Illustrations of Pierre de Ronsards
Love Poems presents a selection of lithographs from this exceptional but
rarely considered livre dartiste. What began in 1941 as a simple
portfolio of 30 lithographs turned into a seven-year project culminating
in the 128-page Florilège des Amours de Ronsard. This immense undertaking
was made all the more extraordinary as Matisse not only illustrated the
text but also selected the poems (which he updated from their 16th-century
French), conceived the layout, chose the typeface and even designed and
decorated the cardboard box in which the volume was packed.
Ronsard (15241585), deemed the father of French lyric
poetry and credited with facilitating the modernization of the French
language, explored playfully erotic themes in poems that were exceedingly
well-suited to the interests of the French painter.

CINEMA
L'Histoire d'Adèle H. (The Story of Adele H.)
8pm / SERIES: ROMANTIC OBSESSION
The Story of Adele H.
(shown with Remember My Name)
Lest you think that only women can be objects of desire, here's two female
stalkers showing the the dark side of romantic obsession from a woman's
perspective--a glaring stare that'll have men everwhere looking over their
shoulders.
First, we have Truffaut's The Story of Adele H., based on the true-life
diaries of Victor Hugo's schizophrenic daughter, and her mad international
pursuit of a handsome army lietenant.
Isabelle Adjani's heart-arresting beauty only makes the insane
focus with which Adele chases her idée fixe around the globe all
the more unnerving, and Nestor Alemendros' gorgeous, natural cinematography
also contributes to one of Truffaut's most underrated masterpieces.
The Story of Adele H. Dir. Francois Truffaut, 1975, 35mm, 96 min.
Remember My Name Dir. Alan Rudolph, 1978, 35mm, 94 min.
