Trendy restaurants come and go. Few stand the test of time. Le Petit Château
is one of those few. Serving the Valley for over 43 years, this quaint
French country inn is still a truly fine dining experience. Located one
mile from the entrance of Universal Studios. They have created an atmosphere
reminiscent of the south of France.
Antiques and original artworks grace the dining areas. The aromas of French
Provençal cuisine fill the air and you feel transported to another
place and time.

CINEMA
2007, Koch Lorber Films, 85 min. Dir. Celine Sciamma. This feature directorial
debut staring newcomers Pauline Acquart (Marie), Louise Blachère
(Anne) and Adèle Haenel (Floriane), explores the vast theme of
nascent teenage sexuality through the relationships of three 15-year-old
girls who compete in their schools synchronized swimming team. Together,
they confront the confusion and cruelty of adolescence while learning
about love and desire. The aquatic setting enhances the amorphous, fleeting
nature of their interactions.

Jessye Norman
The American Song & The French Melody
Mark Markham, piano
One of those once-in-a-generation singers who has
never followed in the footsteps of others, soprano Jessye Norman continues
to build upon her own rich legacy as she brings joy, passion and her opulent
sound to innovative recital performances and operatic portrayals around
the world. The immensity of her voice struck like a thunderbolt,
wrote The Jerusalem Post. It was like an eruption of primal power.
A 2006 recipient of the Grammy Awards Lifetime Achievement Award,
Norman returns to Royce Hall after a breathtaking sold-out performance
in 2005, performing an uplifting program exploring the French and American
songbooks, including works by Ravel, Poulenc, contemporary French American
composer Richard Danielpour and George Gershwin.

Lecture
with Jean-Philippe Vassal
CONFERENCE
| LECTURE
Vassal is director of Lacaton and Vassal Architects in Paris, which
he founded in 1987 with Anne Lacaton.
Openly proclaiming to be a reflection of and search for architectural
economy, the work undertaken by the pair focuses on reduced-cost constructions
in order to rejuvenate the dialogue with contracting authorities.
Research on hybridizations between a contemporary building concept
and the use of the most diversified techniques produces projects
that make the most of construction programs by altering building contractors'
standard usages.
Lacaton and Vassal won the Grand Prix National d'Architecture Jeune Talent
of the French Ministry of Culture in 1999, were nominated for the 1997
Mies van der Rohe Award for their office building in Grenoble, France,
and were finalists for the 2003 Mies van der Rohe Award for their Palais
de Tokyo in Paris.
Some of their other key projects include the University of Arts and Human
Sciences in Grenoble, the Centre for Contemporary Creation in Paris and
several houses in Mulhouse, France.

"Un Chant dAmour" ("A Song of Love")
1950
New Restored and Uncensored 35mm Print
CINEMA
25 min. Dir. Jean Genet.
Outlaw writer Jean Genet (author of subversive classics The Thiefs
Journal and Our Lady of the Flowers) originally made the silent film "Un
Chant dAmour" for Parisian gay porn collectors. Set in a prison,
the sexual fantasies of the prisoners are played out in the sadomasochistic
environment of their surroundings. Banned in France upon its release for
explicit sexuality, the film is voyeuristic and erotic while remarkably
poetic and romantic. Genets sole directorial effort has proved its
importance in queer film culture, influencing works from Andy Warhol to
Todd Haynes.
Genet, 1981, 52 min.
Director Antoine Bourseillers fascinating documentary focuses on
enfant terrible Jean Genet as he speaks candidly in 1981 about
his prison experiences, his sexuality and his work.
